Tree Description

The Pawpaw is North America’s largest native fruit tree and produces a unique tropical-style fruit often described as tasting like a blend of banana, mango, and custard. This native understory tree has large, lush leaves that give it an almost tropical appearance in the landscape.

What makes this tree especially unique is its size and maturity. This 45-gallon Pawpaw is a rare specimen already large and producing fruit, giving you the opportunity to plant an established tree that can begin providing harvests much sooner than typical nursery stock.

Pawpaw trees are increasingly sought after for their delicious fruit, native wildlife value, and unique appearance, making them an exciting addition to edible landscapes and home orchards.

Sun Requirements

• Full sun to partial shade
• Younger trees benefit from some afternoon shade, while mature trees produce best fruit in full sun

Water Requirements

• Water deeply during the first growing season while roots establish
• Typically 10–15 gallons once or twice per week depending on rainfall and weather
• Pawpaws prefer consistent moisture but well-drained soil

Soil & Nutrition

• Prefers rich, well-drained soil with good organic matter
• Performs well in slightly acidic soils common in central Missouri
• Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring if desired
• Maintain 2–3 inches of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect roots

Mature Size

• Height: 15–25 ft
• Spread: 12–20 ft
• Growth rate: Moderate
