Edith Bogue Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Edith Bogue’) – 45 Gallon
Description
Edith Bogue Magnolia is one of the most cold-hardy Southern Magnolia selections, making it an excellent evergreen statement tree for central Missouri landscapes. This variety features large, glossy dark-green leaves with rich bronze undersides and produces fragrant, creamy-white blooms in late spring and early summer. It develops a dense, pyramidal form and provides year-round screening, structure, and elegance. A 45-gallon specimen offers immediate impact and establishes into a strong, long-lived focal point in the landscape.
Planting & Care Guide
🌱 Planting Instructions
Dig a hole 2–3x wider than the root ball, no deeper than the root flare.
Set tree with the root flare slightly above finished grade (½–1″).
Backfill with native soil; avoid heavy peat-based amendments.
Water thoroughly to settle soil.
Apply 2–3″ mulch in a wide ring, keeping mulch pulled back from the trunk.
Large 45-gallon trees should be staked for the first growing season if exposed to wind.
☀️ Sun Requirements
Performs best in full sun to partial sun (6+ hours preferred).
Tolerates some afternoon shade but will bloom more heavily with full sun.
💧 Water Needs
First year: Deep water 1–2 times per week, especially during summer heat.
(A 45-gallon tree may need 15–20 gallons per watering during establishment.)Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Once established, moderately drought tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during extended dry periods.
🌿 Nutrition Needs
Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring formulated for broadleaf evergreens.
Magnolias prefer slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce flowering.
Maintain mulch to improve soil structure and moisture retention.
