Ayers Pear (Pyrus communis ‘Ayers’)
Ayers Pear is a highly productive, Southern-adapted European pear known for its exceptional sweetness and smooth, buttery texture. This vigorous, disease-tolerant tree produces medium-sized, yellow pears with a soft red blush and outstanding fresh-eating quality. It performs very well in central Missouri, tolerates heat and humidity, and typically begins bearing fruit within 2–4 years after planting. A dependable and low-maintenance choice for homeowners wanting reliable harvests and beautiful spring blooms.

This tree is recomended to pair with one of our other pear varieties for optimal pollination.

Ayers Pear – Planting & Care Guide

(Pyrus communis ‘Ayers’)

🌱 Planting Instructions

  • Dig a hole 2–3x wider than the root ball, but no deeper than the root flare.

  • Set the tree so the root flare is slightly above grade (½–1″).

  • Backfill with native soil (avoid heavy amendments).

  • Water thoroughly to remove air pockets.

  • Apply 2–3″ of mulch in a wide ring, keeping mulch 2–3″ away from the trunk.

  • Stake only if necessary and remove stakes after the first year.

☀️ Sun Requirements

  • Requires full sun (minimum 6–8 hours daily) for best fruit production.

  • More sun = better fruit quality and stronger structure.

💧 Water Needs

  • First year: Deep water 1–2 times per week, depending on rainfall (about 10–15 gallons per watering for a 1–1.5″ caliper tree).

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not saturated.

  • After establishment (year 2+): Water during extended dry periods, especially while fruit is developing.

🌿 Nutrition Needs

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring (before bud break).

  • Avoid heavy nitrogen after mid-summer to prevent excessive vegetative growth.

  • If soil is unknown, a soil test is recommended for precise nutrient management.

  • Pears benefit from consistent potassium and micronutrients for strong fruit set.
